Did you that know sweet flavors are the commonly preferred by humans from birth? The taste of sugar releases endorphins that have the ability to relax us and send us on a natural “high”. It’s truly no wonder that so many of us find ourselves addicted to this deliciously sweet carbohydrate that can be found in all sorts of packaged foods and baked goods. While sugar may taste good in our mouths, it’s certainly not good for our bodies. Take note of our tips to beat your sugar addiction.

1. Commit None of the following steps will matter if you don’t first commit to overcoming your sugar addiction. While it may be challenging at times, making the choice to better your health is well worth it. Your body will thank you.

2. Keep It Out of Your Pantry Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you can keep a bag of double chocolate chunk cookies tucked away in the back of your pantry. You will eat them. Empty your kitchen of all sugar temptations and vow not to replenish.

3. Eat More Natural Foods Stock up on whole food proteins, healthy fats, and natural sources of carbohydrates. A great rule of thumb to follow? If it wasn’t available to eat hundreds of years ago, you don’t need it.

4. Find and Remove Hidden Sources of Sugar You may be surprised to learn how many food products contain sugar. Sauces, ketchup, processed foods, drinks, and health bars may all contain added sugar. Dissect food labels before hitting the checkout line.

5. Turn to Fruits and Veggies When you find yourself craving sugary goodness, turn to fruits and vegetables. Both are packed with fiber, water, vitamins, and minerals. And because fruit is naturally sweet, it may stop sugar cravings in their tracks.

6. Get Active When you’re feeling stressed, don’t turn to sugary ice cream for relief. Instead, go for a jog, begin a regular workout regimen, or simply get active with your kids. Like sugar, breaking a sweat can relax you, but without all of the negative health effects.

7. Be Aware Odds are that your sugar cravings come at certain times throughout your week. Feeling bored or upset? Staying up late at night? These are the times when sugar cravings are most likely to hit. Be aware of this, and schedule your meals and healthy snacks accordingly so that you can fight back.

8. Enjoy Life When you find your sugar cravings growing more and more distant, be proud! You committed to better health and are following through. When we eat the way our bodies were designed to, we often find ourselves happy and enjoying life more.

Sugar addiction is a real challenge for many people. You are not alone. By committing to change and following these sugar craving tips you can beat your sugar addiction and enjoy a happier, healthier you!
